Can Veterinarians Recommend CBD for Dogs?

In the state of Florida, veterinarians are not legally allowed to discuss or recommend CBD to customers. This is due to concerns about the unregulated manufacture of CBD products. We spoke to AKC Veterinary Director Dr. Jerry Klein to learn how dog owners can navigate CBD oil discussions with their veterinarians to get the information they need to make the best decision for their dogs.

Paul Rowan, DVM of The Center of Animal Healing, has seen firsthand the positive effects that CBD oil can have on his patients. Studies have shown that CBD can reduce seizure activity, slow the growth of cancer and tumors, and has no serious side effects in dogs. However, there may be some risks associated with taking CBD, so it is important to consult with your veterinarian before giving it to your pet. Unfortunately, veterinarians are not legally allowed to recommend CBD for dogs in most states. This is because cannabis-derived products have not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As a result, veterinarians cannot suggest these products for use in pets. However, customers should still feel comfortable mentioning CBD oil to their veterinarian. If you are interested in using CBD oil for your dog, you should consult with your trusted veterinarian or look for a holistic veterinarian. Andrea Carlson at Southlake Animal Hospital emphasizes the importance of talking to your veterinarian before using CBD for your pet's health status. The recommended dose of CBD for dogs is between 1 and 5 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight as a daily dose.

Keeping your veterinarian informed of your decision to use CBD oil for your dog will also help advise you on any possible contraindications with medications your pet may be taking.
